data_companion.exe
'data_companion.exe' is an interactive personality quiz that matches users with fictional digital beings based on their answers. Players answer ten questions about their digital habits, values, and personality, and the system generates one of six unique data companions: pixel art creatures that live in different corners of the digital world, each with distinct personalities, habitats, and quirks.
The Data Companions
Six companions can be unlocked depending on the player's answers. Each one inhabits a different corner of the digital world and reflects a distinct personality archetype. All companions were illustrated as animated pixel art sprites.
Signal Sprite
A cunning and social fox who thrives in the world of digital communication. Signal lives in messaging apps and social media platforms, constantly learning new slang and memes. They're incredibly persuasive and love to help craft the perfect message or find the latest trends.
Code Cat
A logical and methodical feline who calls code editors and development environments home. Code Cat spends their time in IDEs, text editors, and development tools. They love learning new programming languages and helping debug tricky problems, always ready to help build the next great app.
Pixel Pup
An eco-conscious canine who bridges the digital and natural worlds. Pixel Pup lives in mapping apps, nature identification tools, and eco-friendly software. Always advocating for sustainable digital practices, they love helping find the best hiking trails and identify local wildlife. Adventure awaits wherever they roam.
Circuit Rabbit
A hyperactive electric bunny powered by your every heartbeat and step. Circuit Rabbit bounces between fitness apps, health trackers, and medical devices, getting energised by your workouts and literally charging up from your steps. Their electric personality makes every fitness goal feel achievable.
Data Dragon
A majestic hoarder who treasures every byte in their digital cave. Data Dragon makes their cozy home in hard drives, external storage, and cloud systems. They love collecting and organising vast amounts of information, flying through cloud storage like it's their personal sky. Nothing makes them happier than a well-organised file system and plenty of backup copies.
Binary Bird
A mischievous crow with a talent for digital tricks and a long memory. Binary Bird perches in security tools, network monitors, and system utilities. They're clever hackers who love finding creative solutions to digital problems. While they enjoy harmless pranks, they never forget a kindness and will fiercely protect those they care about.
The Game UI
The interface of 'data_companion.exe' is built around a retro-digital aesthetic inspired by early DOS software, late-90s personality quizzes, and virtual pet culture. Every screen is designed to feel like functional software rather than a decorative game asset.
Introduction Screen
The introduction screen greets players with a welcome message from the Digital Companion Lab and a preview of all six companions side by side, building anticipation before the quiz begins. A glowing cyan "Press SPACE to begin" prompt anchors the retro-terminal feel.
Question Screen
Each of the ten questions is presented one at a time. Four interactive 3D-style buttons display the possible answers, while the question itself appears in a framed box at the bottom of the screen. Players can navigate using arrow keys or click directly. A question counter in the top-right corner tracks progress through the quiz.
Results Screen
The results screen reveals the matched companion with their animated pixel art sprite, a randomly generated name, a personality breakdown displayed as trait progress bars, descriptive lore, and a list of personality traits. A single "Create another companion" button invites players to replay and discover the other five companions.
